Satellite Winds

First you should understand how a sequence of pictures, or satellite images, can be used to measure the speed of objects. How this is accomplished, and some of the difficulties we encounter are discussed at the beginning of this alcove.

If you understand these concepts, you might want to try using our interactive program to measure cloud drift winds.

Here's a discussion of the forces that generate the winds, and an applet that helps you explore these relationships.
